Lawyers Make a Difference From the First Court Appearance

Evidence demonstrates that having a lawyer at the initial court appearance improves the likely outcome for a criminal defendant. One study has shown that a defendant who first appears with counsel is:

a) 2.5 times more likely to be released on her own recognizance;
b) 4.5 times more likely to have bail reduced significantly; and
c) Serves less time in jail (reduced from average of nine days to average of two days)
